A good couple of dives yesterday at GDRE. 1st time that any of our party had been there although I think cheeky & gus had dived it before.
The weather wasn't kind, but we managed to get parked close by & had the site to ourselves. The parking is on the other side of the road and access involves climbing over a crash barrier, through a wood and down a rocky path. It's a bit tricky fully kitted but much easier than The Caves or Gorton Point. There's a small shore which was almost fully submerged at high tide.
Our plan was to go in as a 3, drop down to 32m max, come up to 20m & then for Euan & Erika to do a shared ascent. However, when we submerged and descended, the big man had bother with his ears & had to abort. We took him back up to 3m and sent him upwards. Erika & I continued down to 31m. Very dark down there just like it often is at The Caves with a lot of turbidity in the shallows robbing us of light at depth. We headed back up the fairly steep featureless silty slope not spotting the supposed walls and drop-offs. There was the odd crustacean and occasional fish but not a lot else to report. Was still a nice dive though and well worth doing.
After a nice lunch, we tried again as a 3. We all managed to get down this time and fortunately spotted the wall which was slightly to our left. We headed over to it and followed it down. It's quite impressive: big vertical slabs of rocks in a step like conformation and covered in sealoch anemones and peacock worms. Erika's torch failed at about 20m so I gave her my spare and we continued down to 31m. Down there we found a traffic cone covered in anemones: I think that the others took some photos of it. We made our way at a leisurely pace back up the walls, spotting a nice dragonet on the way up.
Quite an effortless dive really & a great place to get depth (it goes down to 50m+ apparently). If you find the drop-offs it's well worth doing, otherwise it's pretty bland. I think that I could find them again however (maybe)
We had some enjoyable drinks in the Village Inn & saw some of the Eastwood divers who'd been at the apparently mobbed Conger Alley.
I think that we made a good choice: let's go back some time!

The photo's i uploaded can be viewed in the gallery. To find the go into the Marine Biology & Photography section of the forum and select New feature. Then click the link. There is probabaly an easier way to view the gallery but i don't know what it is. Maybe Charlie could help me out here.

Erika, thanks a lot for posting the photos. They wouldn't show in your previous post due to a setting in your profile. I've now corrected it but I guess it doesn't work retrospectively, so here's what it should have looked like (hopefully the feature will work for you in future): | enc01 wrote: | nice picture charlie. a couple of mine turned out not too bad. i'll try to upload them but i'm not that good with these things. hope it works.

Nice one, Erika!
The bottom photo is the traffic cone if I'm not mistaken (can see the red plastic shining through). Good photography skills at 31m!

You are correct charlie, but it was more luck than anything that it turned out good. It was a point and pray photo.
