MoneyFrom your experience, Karyn, is it likely that we'll be able to withdraw money from ATM machines of Turkish banks?
Or would you recommend travellers' cheques? If so, do you normally get them in Pounds Sterling or US dollars?

Yes you can withdraw money out there, although there will be a service charge each time you use it. (I only remember withdrawing with a credit card though, not my student bank account one).
Travellers cheques are a good idea, but they cannot be used in shops as you would in the US for example but must be exchanged at well exchange shops (what are those called again??? ).
I usually carry at least some travellers cheques (I use Pounds Sterling - I think, I get confused easily these days) in case I go to Greece and they are good if you are planing on carrying a lot of cash.
I would day that if you are going to take all your money out the bank at once then use the ATM's but if you are going to make multiple small withdrawls/exchanges then travellers cheques can be used.
Remember your £10 English for your Visa's!
(Hope that this has answered your question Charlie!?)

MoneyHey Charlie,
When I was out in Turkey I just used my normal bank card in the ATM's. As long as it has the Cirrus/ Maestro sign on the card it will work. Hope you have a great time out there.

Erika,
Thanks for the info: that's great.
I think that you get shafted with commission regardless of whether you use ATMs or traveller's cheques abroad. At least using the Maestro card there's not the hassle of having to get to banks while they're open to cash cheques.
