Ponys, could you.....

Not a problem anymore, Lets go and spend money on things I dont need woo!

gonna get new 1st n 2nd, get my current one sorted sometime after (leaky 1st and 2nd) and stick it on a pony sometime next year!

Is this a theoretical set up.....

Main Air Source.

1st Stage
2nd Stage Primary reg
BCD Inflation
Drysuit Inflation
HIgh Pressure

Pony Bottle
1st Stage
2nd Stage (Acting as Octopus)
HP

Basically just using the pony as an octopus so you could have a pony and no octopus on the main regs.

Or is this against ScotSAC regulations?

Good question. You certainly could employ that set up & some people do. Personally I wouldn't, as in an out of air situation I wouldn't expect my buddy to necessarily have good enough air consumption to not breathe the pony dry. Of course, in such a scenario, I could take the pony & give them my primary 2nd stage, but then it would be better to have a long hose on it. I think for all the cost of an extra 2nd stage I prefer the back up that it offers.

Why do you ask anyway, Euan? Does that set up appeal to you for some particular reason? I think it would still satisfy ScotSAC's requirement for an 'alternative air source'. http://www.scotsac.com/news.htm#ascents

Scubaeuan just wants to dive with Scuba steve I think! Idea

You could get several ponies of all different sizes Euan - you'd be even more like the great man! Evil or Very Mad

Forget ponies, just spend the extra few pounds and get a proper horse!

Seriously though, they're designed to be an alternative air supply while an octopus is an alternative air source. You should still have an octopus on your main tank.

Where's our resident excessive kit diver with his tuppence worth?
Guuuuuuuss...........

well reading this sheet of paper from whithin sports diver magazine this time it looks like to satisfy the requirements. It look like for shares a second stage on a pony with no octopus on the main tank is sufficient.

i think that having an alternative air supply, i.e. a pony must be safer for an individual as it is your own back up. Thus having no octopus on the main tank would be grand.
However the air in a pony is limited and particularly from depth will not last long.

surely having an octopus on the main tank and a pony rig will give the most redundancy however euans configuation sounds good to me. Not so good for training though i recon.

good good

Yeah, I think it depends upon what kind of diving you do.

Read this quote from a guy on the Conger Alley website:

http://www.congeralley.com/forums/showthread.php?t=150&page=2

"I once tried an asssisted ascent from 30 to the surface donating my pony to my buddy. We took it at a reasonable, i.e. not fast, rate, and he ran OOA at about 5m and we switched to BB. i.e. if you breath a pony from around 30 to the surface, and don't get a move on (donating or not), chances are you'll suck it dry before you get there.

Given that OOA situations entail a lot of fannying around, hose organisation and "settling down" before the pair even start to ascend, donating a pony is probably feck all use, unless you're ready to buddy breath at some point."

I would definitely prefer to have a octopus on the main cylinder in addition to the pony. As Gus says, the more redundant air you have the better: more options are better than fewer in a crisis! Shocked

How about you pretend to buy a pony, buy a nice ice cream instead and donate the financial difference to the club Cool
scubaeuan

Hows abouts the club sells ice cream?

any way, you dont know scuba steve like i do, we are just going to move to an island and suck ponys all day, wait? what the hell did i just say? DELTE BUTTON
Sarah

DELTE BUTTON?

Is that a part of the horse? Shocked
