Portencross 25/3

Hey all you slackers! We missed you yesterday! Very Happy

The Firth of Clyde was beautiful if nothing else and the weather was absolutely perfect. An all round awesome day for diving

Charlie and I went in first while Sarah and Gus watched with the little McGurks. I wish I could say we found a spanish galleon with lots of pretty treasure but that would be a lie. Instead we found very cold and green waters with vis 1 point above abysmal. Smile It cleared up a bit as we went deeper (about 10 m) but, at best, we were able to see about a meter and a half. At worst... maybe half a meter. Smile Even so, on my second dive, I was very excited to see my first mermaid's purse (complete with embryo) and a few other beasties of the semi-deep (velvet swimming crabs and spider crabs).

Then it was Sarah and Gus's turn. I do know that they too failed to find the legendary galleon (though I suppose it may be turning into a white whale). Other than that, I will have to leave it to them to explain.

Sarah decided to skip a second dive so the third and final dive of the day consisted of Gus, Charlie, and I after which we made our way back to Stirling via The Hungry Monk for hot chocolate, fizzy drinks, and crisps.

All in all, a very good dive.

Anything anyone else would like to add?

Nice pics max, did Charlie try and kill you by having a ridiculous dive time?

Only 40 minutes on the second dive. Pretty much drained my tank though. Smile

Charlie was probably snacking on your air though.

It was 42 min & I thought that you had 80 bar left: very impressive air consumption Smile. Fortunately, Sarah knows what I'm like so didn't panic even although our dive plan was 40 min! I actually thought that I'd said 45 min, so it shows how clued up I am! Plan the dive, dive the plan... who said that? Rolling Eyes

Yeah it was a thoroughly great day out: thanks to Max for making it happen! Smile

As he said, the viz was shocking in the shallows, but Max was not phased in the slightest: took it all in his stride. He got masses of skills signed off: he's gonna be a great diver - shame that we're going to lose him!

Enjoyable drinks in the pub afterwards in front of a nice open fire.

Can't beat it & what a contrast to last weekend!

Roll on mid-semester... it's going to be fantastic!

Tut tut!!! 2mins off dive plan would have already called coast guards!!!!

Is that an example? who taught u such bad habits Charlie!!! Confused
joe

i see a trend occuring ie a certain someone out late when we were at st catherines Cool
prydain55

On the other hand, we came out 15 min early the first dive.

By the way, can I get those pics off you Charlie?

On a serious note, if trainees are reading this, you shouldn't be going over your plan and you certainly shouldn't be making a habit out of it (especially if you're a master diver BI on the ScotSAC committee and you have TWO computers).

Seriously trainees, plan the dive and dive the plan.

Shug has highlighted an important point, and I shouldn't be flippant about it. It is important to formulate a realistic dive plan & stick to it. In future I'll probably write it on my slate so that I don't forget what I said to the shore cover: lesson learnt. Embarassed

However, if you do find yourself in a position where you would consider cutting short deco or safety stops just to get to the surface at a predetermined time: don't! Two wrongs don't make a right. Fulfil all of your deco requirements, and then surface when it's safe. But be prepared for an earful from the dive marshal (especially if it's Shug).

Shug, I'll be keeping a close eye on your dive time the next time you're out diving! Surprised

Dude, the way my suit lets in water I'll never be late Sad

Point taken... As I accidently proved Saturday, my watch is waterproof. Smile

And this is also very true!!! some shore marshalls have been known to be real harsh but its good some times!!!
