Sound of Mull

Just back down to earth after a fantastic weekend diving in the Sound of Mull with Cheeky on the Glasgow Uni trip to Lochaline.

Got through on Friday afternoon and enjoyed a fantastic 40m dip from Lochaline Hotel Beach: a wonderwall which descends to over 60m: amazing! Due to the high spring tide, there was a very strong current meaning that we drifted along the wall. Best shore dive ever! Smile Tasty meal & refreshing drinks at the hotel until pretty late. Then upon getting back to the dive centre, I decided to try & upload the dive profile & photos to my laptop. Met the guys from Hamilton SAC who were very friendly (we knew some of them from courses we'd been on at ScotSAC HQ) and we ended up chatting until late.

On Saturday morning, we headed bleary-eyed to Bo Fascadale which is north of the Ardnamurchan peninsula. When we were half way there, I decided to take a photo on our boat, the Brendan. An unfamiliar warning flashed on the screen: "no memory stick". D'oh, I'd left it in the card reader with my laptop - what a pudding I felt! The dive was fantastic though: a really fast drift due to the spring tides. Stopped off in Tobermory for a walk before diving the Shuna. My first real wreck: what an absolute joy! It sits upright in 32 m. Amazingly intact, allowing swimming into some of the bigger holds.

An early night on Saturday in preparation for doing the Rondo & Hispania on Sunday. The Rondo lies on a steep slope with the rudder at about 8m down to bow at 50m. It is possible to swim underneath the wreck at about 22m with the strong current sucking you through. The Hispania has to be seen to be believed. It sits upright although lists slightly to one side. It's quite intact and it's possible to swim through many of the holds. I followed cheeky through some pretty tight spaces: in fact we both have a fair bit of Hispania rust on our dry suits now! The amount of life is breathtaking, both on the wreck and around it. Unfortunately, the dive had to end although neither of us wanted to ascend. So we joined the very crowded shot line for our safety stops.

Out of this world! An outstanding weekend. Smile

The Sound of Mull offers one hell of a diving experience! Lochaline Dive Centre & Lochaline Boat Charters highly recommended.

Definitely should try to do this. Smile

Can dive the Sound as a day trip from Oban.

Here's a snap of the stern of the SS Rondo:

If we're talking a residential Dot trip, Kyle of Lochalsh (?) anyone? Huge, shallow wreck, cracking wall dives, free helicopter rides..... Wink

Sounds good, Shug. Make it so! Wink

A day trip from Oban is probably a bit more affordable though. There's so much potential: The Breda, The Sound of Mull wrecks & walls, The Garvellachs... Smile

We really have to do this: it absolutely is the dog's... you know the rest
