Yorkshire & Lancashire divingSarah & I managed to get 5 exciting dives in during our week on hols in Yorkshire.
Firstly, was a drift dive at Devil's Bridge, River Lune, Kirkby Lonsdale. Current wasn't too stong, but was a nice drift with lots of eels, trout & little fish to see.
Next was waterfall diving at Stainforth Force, Settle. Entry was via a caravan site. The warden was a diver, so he let us on for free & gave us the key to the gate to allow us to get the car really close. We got lots of attention from the holiday makers, typically asking us for all the details before we'd even got wet & asking us to retrieve lost jewellery etc... fat chance First dive was in a pool which had a radius of about 3m, near the top of the falls. We plunged in and submerged. With all the water tumbling in from the river the viz was approx 50cm. We kept a tight grip of each other and descended. It was akin to a 10m deep jacuzzi Could only tell we'd reached the bottom by touch: could see bugger all! Stayed down long enough to log the dive and made a nice controlled ascent: was good practice in such conditions, but not a lot of fun to be honest Second dive of the night was into the river below the biggest of the falls (the bottom one). We made a stride entry from the waterfall itself (well slightly to the side of it) and plummeted a couple of metres into the pool. Was a nice wall dive (lots of crevices to explore & a brown trout made an appearance). Viz was a lot better. Quite fun really, but the exit was tricky: up a metal ladder & cliff.
Third dive site was Capernwray Quarry aka "Underwater Theme Park" . This is a commercial diving site with shop, restaurant etc. Lots of wrecks to explore including a 50ft minesweeper from WWII, lots of boats, 2 helicopters, a 'cave' & fibreglass horses. Loads of lovely fish: massive rainbow & brown trout, perch, roach and a weird looking sturgeon which I unfortunately wasn't quick enough to photograph. Great place to practise compass courses: if you don't get the bearings right, you don't find the wrecks
Most enjoyable: we'll return I'm sure

I'd like to also mention that this lack of fun did not deter Charlie from wishing to dive the middle pool of the waterfall which had a very similar appearance to the first pool! Sadly his boring wife felt she would prefer to go home for dinner.
